Antony Gibbs

Superb, completely under-regarded film editor -- via Variety. Amazingly, never Oscar-nominated. He came up with the Angry Young Man school of English New Wave cinema, and cut Tony Richardson's "A Taste of Honey," "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner," still an editing textbook; and "Tom Jones." Listen to this: he edited "Petulia" and "Performance," "Walkabout" and "Jesus Christ Superstar," and my personal fave, "Juggernaut." He did "Rollerball" and "A Bridge Too Far," "In Country" and "Don Juan DeMarco," HE CUT "RONIN." I love this guy -- he epitomized sharp. incisive cuts that alllmost seem to come too soon, but don't. His editing propelled films forward, efficiently, creatively ,and with the maximum use of whatever footage he got. He could save a shitty film, the ultimate compliment. Dede Allen cites him as a exemplar, and that's good enough for me.
