John McMartin

Actor on stage, film, and TV -- via Playbill. An intense and expert actor, he didn't get enough recognition in my book, perhaps because of his deceptively all-American looks. He originated the role of Oscar in "Sweet Charity," and Ben Stone in "Follies." Fortunately, his performance in 1975 as Leone in Pirandello's "Rules of the Game" was filmed; it's riveting, and strongly influenced my sense of what was possible to do, acting-wise. His career spanned the years 1959 to 2015.
