Albert Maysles

Filmmaker -- via the New York Times. With his brother David and alone, he created some of the most influential documentaries in American history -- among them "Salesman," "Gimme Shelter," and "Grey Gardens." He made technical improvements, especially with sync sound, that allowed him to shoot "fly on the wall"-style observational films. Most of all, he had the sense when to shoot, and how to keep people relaxed.
