Manohar Aich

Bodybuilder -- via the New York Times. AKA Pocket Hercules. I love this guy. He lived to 103 or 104, living on lentils, rice, fruit, vegetables, fish, and milk. Incredibly strong, he did simple exercises to sustain his bulk. He fought for Britain in WWII, then went to military prison for slapping an officer who spoke in favor of colonial oppression. Pretty ballsy for a guy who was 4' 11'.

He was a Mr. Universe, and trained many in strength sports. He cited a philosophy he called As it is," an acceptance and gratitude for what each day brought. "I never allow any sort of tension to grip me," he said. This, combined with his singular mental discipline, made him the best at what he wanted to do. He never had a lot of dough, but he did his best and he was happy in the day.

Wonderful obit by Geeta Anand!
