Michael Cimino

Director, screenwriter, and producer -- via the New York Times. Made one good caper film, "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot"; one of the greatest American films ever made, "The Deer Hunter"; and an epic, interesting failure, "Heaven's Gate." Then a bunch of crap. All of his three significant films are critiques of the American way; in "Heaven's Gate," the cavalry comes to rescue the bad guys. Fascinating, but a troubled legacy.
