Maggie Roche
Extraordinary songwriter and singer -- via Pitchfork. I fell in love with the Roches -- Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy -- via their 1979 debut album. Three extraordinary voices, singing brilliant songs (Maggie had the rich, smooth contralto voice). I learned them all and sang along for years. Finally, when I reviewed her and Suzzy's "Why the Long Face?" album in 2004, I sent it to them with a fan letter -- and by golly, Maggie wrote me back. What nice person!
The sisters' work deals extensively with hope and joy and faith, and it still sustains me. Thanks, Maggie, for everything.
