Sam Panopoulos

Creator, for good or ill, of the Hawaiian pizza -- via the BBC. A classic world food tale -- in 1962, this Greek-born Italian-food restaurateur in Canada puts pineapple on his product. People loved it. This was also the height of the Tiki boom in American vernacular design, so all things Pacific were big in America (there were bars in all my friends' dads' basements, all fringed with bamboo and palm fronds, whilst really bad, syrup-arranged pseudo-Hawaiian melodies were stacked on the spindle of the hi-fi). Love it or loathe it, by God we are stuck with pineapple on pizza thanks to Sam. Just put it on half, OK? YOUR half.
