Alan Abel
Hoaxer -- via the New York Times. He gained but a little fame, and no fortune, but Abel was one of the great ethical con men in history. These pranks, or mental hotfoots, were guerilla attacks on the gullible sensitivities of everyone, especially those who were supposed to know better -- figures in government and in the press.
