David Bowie

Composer, musician, singer, and actor -- via the New York Times. AKA David Jones. From 1969 through last week, he produced innovative, uncompromising work. A mater chameleon, he changed and sampled styles as readily as Stravinsky. He made music that was tough. He taught us that we could make of ourselves whatever we wished, and change that as frequently as we please. A master of disguise who kept revealing himself through his music and words. One of the smartest people ever to make music, he resistedthe pressure to be like anyone else and fragmented into a thousand riveting personalities. Most important of all, he made good, thoughtful work that we can all sing, forever. Thanks, David.
