Colin Low

Filmmaker and creator of the 'Ken Burns effect' -- via the CBC. His "City of Gold" was the first to use the pan-and-scan of static photographs to create a narrative, a strategy documentary maker Ken Burns would work extensively. Low's film "Universe" had a strong effect on Stanley Kubrick, who was preparing "2001: A Space Odyssey" at the time. Kubrick would end up using "Universe" narrator Douglas Rain as the voice of the homicidal computer HAL in "2001."
