Philip Gossett
Musicologist -- via Giornale della Musica. A pioneer in the serious study of 19th century opera, his writing on the subject is required reading for the opera lover. He was in charge of the mammoth and ongoing University of Chicago project that's producing the definitive critical editions of all of Rossini's and Verdi's operas. The last word in a dedicated, exhaustive, imaginative researcher. Chutzpah! I love this guy.
