Richard Wilbur

Poet and translator -- via the New York Times. I am particularly grateful for his translations of French writers such as Moliere, Racine, and Baudelaire. So often translators of stage works have zero ear for what will play onstage, especially comedy; Wilbur was the first to make a translation of Moliere that I could understand -- and that might actually evoke laughter from an audience.
