Fred Hess

Saxophonist, composer, and teacher -- via his Facebook page. I got to know him in the '80s, while he played with Bruce Odland and Ron Miles. He was funny, smart, and interesting and I loved to hear him play. He was a wonderful music-maker, with great ideas that he expressed expertly. He made music theory interesting, which is impossible. He founded the Boulder Creative Music Ensemble. Later, he was my go-to guy as a journalist for information about jazz and the Denver music scene. The last time I interviewed him was in 2012 for a 5280 magazine piece on the history of jazz in Denver-- link here. Just a damn fine human being.
