Terese Hayden

Actress and acting teacher, director and producer; founder of New York's theater's Players Guide; my acing teacher. Our classes with Terry took place in the leaky old basement of a rundown hotel on Herald Square. We didn't care. She was imperious and feisty; very vital. I remember working on sense memory with her, a strong Method tenet (I was in the Circle in the Square program, which used a hybrid of training techniques; Stella Adler still reigned at another program, and somewhere Charles Ludlam was teaching too). Most importantly for me, she talked about how to conceive of ourselves as workers most insecure profession. "You're all guttersnipes," she would exclaim. "Be proud of it!" AKA Cecile Hyman.
