This was one of the greatest jazz pianists in the world. I appreciate you mentioning him here but The New York Times should be running an obituary. I am appalled that they are not. I was his students for years, and I knew him for 33. This leaves an irreparable loss in my life as well as in the lives of all who studied and played with him. He was probably the kindest and most generous person I have ever known. He was self-effacing, attributing any accomplishment to those who influenced him - primarily Phineas Newborn - and praising both Newborn, Chris Anderson, and many others including Art Tatum, whom he justly called the greatest pianist of all time. I loved him. We will never see his like again.
